I thought I'd let you see some photos of Wilfred the fledgling blackbird that inhabits the courtyard at The King's Head pub in Horncastle (aka The Thatch)

His parents nested behind some trellis and plastic vine leaves and raised 3 chicks, who were nickned pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Pip and squeak fledged successfully and disappeared but Wilfred was obviously the weaker of the trio and tucked himself away in the courtyard.

His mum has been feeding him, and the regulars have left food for him and protected him from harm.

Wilfred has a good life - which means he's not appearing very reluctant to leave such a safe environment with free food. S reckons he's getting to fat to fly on beer and pork scratchings!

Mum is now sitting on a second clutch in the same nest.

The pub has also been home to nests for starlings and pigeons - but most impressive is the nest of a collared dove balanced precariously on a beam on the entrance porch. despite all noise and the constant comings and goings she has raised 2 chicks which are ready to fledge any day now.

The landlady is thinking of renaming the pub "The Blackbird"!
